Sharon Clarke Haugli
Sharon is a Canadian artist with roots in Vancouver, BC and the Okanagan’s lake and wine country region. The inspiration for her work is a compilation of influences from the various places she has lived as well as her outdoor interests and view of the world. She has 4 main bodies of work: her Beach Treasure Inspired collection - see slideshow 1, Modern Florals (slideshow 2), Landscapes (slideshow 3) Animals (slideshow 4), and Stylized Florals (slideshow 5).
Sharon spent most of her life on the West Coast of BC in Vancouver and Vancouver Island growing up and spent many summers holidaying on the lakes and beaches of the Okanagan. It seems only natural that she continues to be inspired by her time on the beach. Over the past few years she has developed a unique body of work inspired by the beach treasure she collects with her family and friends. This collection is intensely personal and special to her and her aim is to bring that sense of calm and peacefulness she finds beach-combing into her work.
Always a lover of flowers, she is well known for her large scale floral work which over the years has morphed back and forth from stylized and almost graphic to the loose and flowing contemporary representation she has become most associated with.
A hiker, nature enthusiast, animal lover and bird watcher, it was only a matter of time before Sharon began to experiment painting animals that captured her heart and imagination. Sharing animal and bird sightings with her little boy continues to fuel this series. Her neighbourhood is flanked by forests and hiking trails and sightings of deer, birds, and even bears is a fairly regular occurrence for her area.
In terms of process, she utilizes a combination of memory, intuition, real inspiration and objects as well as her photos to create the image she wants. Each piece is meant to evoke a certain feeling or state that is elusive or fleeting. Her intention is to create an image that brings up the desired feelings or states we long for and to guide us back to how we want to be when other states or feelings take over.
Sharon graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Emily Carr University in 1998 and has shown at galleries in Vancouver, Kelowna, Penticton and Calgary. Details of gallery representation are available on the Artist CV page. In 2018, Sharon decided to take on the business aspect of her art career as well as the creative and has been offering her work through her website, group and individual shows, art markets and through her social media platforms including Instagram (@clarkhaugli) and Facebook (Sharon Clarke-Haugli). Since 2018 her work has been featured in three magazines, see magazine articles and press for details.
